Dr. Zhang is also the Vice leader of Chinese Tai Chi Association of Rehabilitation in China and Vice Dean of Department of Martial Arts Training and International Promotion, Confucius Institute Headquarter, China. Dr. Zhang is the representative inheritor of Hulei Tai Chi, and creator of the tai chi training system "Twelve Dynamics".
Reviewing various styles of Tai Chi routines, Dr. Zhang found that a common feature among all schools of Tai Chi: both external and internal of our body movements follow trajectories of circles, which are carried in three dimensions of space. If we divide the actions of Tai Chi into different dimensions, there will be vertical, frontal, and horizontal movements. There are a total of twelve actions in three dimensions, thus the "Twelve Dynamics". |

For those who wish to study tai chi for the internal martial art, one must understand peng energy and exhibit peng in one’s movements. Of the eight energies in tai chi: peng, lu, ji, an, cai, lie, zhou, kao, peng is considered the most important energy and should be ever present in tai chi movements. Peng energy enables you to be strong while staying soft and loose, without exerting muscular tension. This workshop will begin with exercises to practice bringing the expansive inflation of peng in our own movements. The workshop will continue with partner exercises to practice peng when gentle external force is applied.

“Pay attention to the yao (waist/core) at all times; Completely relax the abdomen and the qi (breath/life energy) rises up. When the coccyx is straight, the shen (spirit) goes through the headtop. To make the whole body light and agile, suspend the headtop.”
-from the Tai Chi Classics In tai chi, one must relax the whole body, yet one must maintain proper body alignment. These two tai chi principles seem at odds with each other. This workshop is devoted to listening to our internal bodies through sitting and standing meditation, utilizing both tai chi and yoga techniques. We will release our body’s tension and feel our bodies settle into proper alignment through relaxation.
